Thank you to everyone who shared, retweeted, responded, commented and gave insight on my last blog. So wonderful to hear so many people’s perspective.
I feel like I need to clarify a point that was widely misunderstood.
I love hippies. Just like I love punks and DINKS and mamas who are “too posh to push”. Whatever you wanna call yourself, I wanna know what drives you, what you enjoy and what lenses you see your world through. The sociologist in me is absolutely and completely fascinated by how people see themselves.
I have no problem with what you call yourself…or not call yourself. I’m not picking on those that call themselves hippie or crunchy. Honestly, its the opposite. Many of the things that I love about parenting have long been labeled as such.
And there is my point. Call yourself whatever you want. Just don’t put that same label on Breastfeeding and Natural Birth. By labeling these things, we take them out of the mainstream. We move them from the aisle everyone goes down and limit their accessibility.
I want every mama, regardless of lifestyle, choices or “things that make her tick” to see breastfeeding and natural birth as an option for her.
I’ve offended those that might label themselves “hippie” or “crunchy”. I’m ok with that. If I did a survey, I would guess that most that call themselves that see breastfeeding and natural birth as an option. A population well-informed, maybe? But until we see higher numbers of mamas breastfeeding and taking charge of their births across the board, we have more work to do.
